Book Art with Primary Children
By Paula Briggs
Book art is a popular activity – the act of transforming a book into an artwork. I thought it would make a lovely focus for our Drawing Workshop for Ages 6 to 10.
There are many interpretations of “book art” or “artist’s books”. In this resource we’ll define “book art” as being the act of transforming a book into an artwork, whilst still retaining its “bookishness”. “Artist’s books” we will define as a book made by an artist (and we’ll be exploring making artist’s books next week).
Following on from last week’s session when we began to tune into how paper can become three-dimensional to create forms with personalities, this week we gave ourselves an hour (!) to create a piece of book art using mixed media and paper manipulation techniques.

These are utterly beautiful, so gentle and fantastical .. how wonderful to be able to inspire these children to make such individual self expression beautiful things. How fortunate they are to have you encouraging them along this path.
