Wax Resist with Coloured Inks and Sgraffito on Foamboard
This project led on from the Chimera and The Jabberwocky workshops so the children were well versed in creating beasts and thinking about mark-making and texture.
In these three, one hour and twenty minute sessions, children were introduced to a three part project exploring:
- drawing and image transfer onto foamboard,
- mark-making and washes with wax-resist technique
- and finally scratiching or ‘scraffito’ into pastel.

After the background wash of ink, what was used on the creature, before the black oil pastel was added to scratch onto to reveal the colour underneath? Sorry got a bit lost with that part of the process. Thank you

Hello Natalie – ink is used, for the background (with wax resist if you like) and then more ink is applied to build up the colour on the animal itself. Then black oil pastel is applied over the animal so you can scratch through it to reveal the ink… hope that helps, good luck, Paula

Hi, I just wondered what the significance of the foamboard is. How does it add to the effect? Would cardboard work just as well?
Thank you

We used to use lots of foam board in sessions and now we try to use less – just because we are more environmentally aware – but the way it takes ink is very seductive – the ink sits really well on the surface (as does the pastel in this resource). But yes,, by all means experiment on cardboard – a cardboard with a smoother finish might work better for you – like a good quality mountboard which you can buy or sometimes get the offcut scraps for free from framers…

Hi I was wondering if there is any particular ink you use to create the wash or could I use the brusho powder bottles and just add water.
Thank you

Hi we’ve never used brusho with this technique but you could definitely give it a go and experiment! otherwise any other kind of ink will work well – good luck xx

Thank you for replying, I’ll give the brusho powder a try. If this fails could I ask what ink you used in the pictures as I’m at a bit of a loss and the plan states the use of an ink medium.
Thank you again!!
