Teenagers Explore Expressive Drawing with Charcoal and Soft Pastels
By Sheila Ceccarelli
This workshop followed on from a previous session, when teenagers worked on sharing drawings and moving colour to music, as a way of exploring expressive mark making and pushing a drawing to its limit. This resource shares how we enabled expressive drawing in charcoal and soft pastels.

What a beautiful post. Going from the unknown and then gracefully encouraged to construct the process has produced breathtaking images of beauty, grace and well grounded confidence. Viewing the images was like taking a walk in a world class museum of modern art. Thank you.

Thank you Pat for your encouraging comments. I will pass them on to the students this evening.

I really like this, especially the reviewing and developing the process on through drawing in response to a drawing. I am planning lessons for a week of activities to build resilience at the PRU where I teach, and I might well use elements of this workshop. It will give my students an opportunity to be resilient, to over come the fear of the unknown result, take risks, build confidence in themselves to explore and make decisions, and develop a piece of work organically.
