Artist and educator Anna Linch worked with all of the children from the Educare Small School over a few days, to enable each child to explore self portraiture photography in a creative project that included drawing and mixed media.
This project was shared with AccessArt as part of the 40 Artist Educator Project, funded by Arts Council England, aiming to highlight and celebrate artist-led teaching and facilitation.
Putting You in the Picture; Self-Portraiture, Photography and Mixed-media by Anna Linch
During the Summer term 2013, Anna was Artist-in-residence at Educare Small School, Kingston-upon-Thames. The whole school and curriculum were given over to her for an intensive few days when every child (aged 3-10) learnt about the history of self-portraiture and took part in photography, drawing and mixed media activities.
Before the project began, the children were asked to consider what makes them who they are. At home, each child carefully selected objects and pictures that would tell another person about themselves – hobbies, family, pets, likes and dislikes. These personal collections became the focus of their artworks – a multi-media piece, a film and a series of photographs, some of which can be seen here.
Anna used this project as a case-study for a CPD course aimed at Primary Art Co-ordinators, who went through the same processes described below.
