Making Paper Bowls with Lisa Smith
Lisa Smith showed visitors to the AccessArt Festival of Making 2011 marquee how to make paper bowls from rolled up newspaper. What was amazing was how strong the bowls were when they were finished – and that everyone who started making a bowl ended up with a really beautiful object. A great workshop idea for all ages and especially nice for families working together. Thanks Lisa!

I used this with a ks3 class and just asked them to create a pod shape inspired by nature but using paper spills and the bowl technique. All the pupils really enjoyed using the simple technique and couldn’t believe how strong the spills were from just using a dab of glue and old newspaper sheets! Fantastic! I especially liked the kids who explored with the idea further and began making shell shapes.

Thanks Hannah – lovely to see. Yes I’ve always wanted to extend this technique into making sculptural forms – could be fun! Thank you for posting

Love this project idea! What size of plastic tubes did you use? Would straws work? Thanks, Rosie 🙂

Hi Rosalind, we didn’t run this activity ourselves directly, but yes we think paper straws could work just as well!
