Making Birds! Sculpture Ideas for Primary Schools
By Paula Briggs
These striking birds are easy to make and combine your drawing and making skills. Make one as a pet, or make a whole flock as a piece of sculpture! You could even make them a house to live in or a tree to perch in!

This is a great project for children as the actual technique is quite simple yet there’s lots of room for experimentation and individuality.

This is a lovely project. How long did it take?

We did it in an hour long session – though I had made the feet prior to the session… and i think ideally we could have done with an extra 15 or so minutes. I think that would have helped some of the children really build out with the paper to make 3-d forms..
The foam board was great to work with.

These are what some of my year 1 children produced in 2017. I am about to try the project again with year 2 this time as part of their topic on British nature. It was a really successful scheme of work last time – we carried the work over several week, beginning with observational drawings of birds. The children enjoyed the work, it covered a variety of skills and elements of art and they produced work they were proud of at the end.
I tried to make a tree out of small branches collected from the playground to display the birds on, but couldn’t get them to stand up!

I love these birds! What thickness of wire do you recommend buying? Thank you!

We used paper clips… but you can also use 1mm bindng wire which is malleable but also strong xx
