Inset: Sculptural Willow for Teachers

Willow sticks (or withies) make an ideal material with which children of all ages can make construction-based sculpture. Withies are flexible and can be cut, shaped, bent and tied to make a variety of forms. Methods of construction can be varied according to the age/skill of the pupils, and the resulting structures can be left as sculptures or further decorated with paper, feathers etc.

The Sculptural Willow Inset aims to give teachers a practical understanding of the potential of willow to make sculptures. Making sculpture from willows provides children with an excellent opportunity to understand how material and process come together to make sculpture. Children build an active understanding of structure (strong and 3 dimensional structures) and of creating forms which can stand, hang, lay or sit.

Even better, Sculptural Willow can be themed along a variety of subjects: birds, animals, mini beasts, landscape, architecture or figurative.

This inset is suitable for teachers of all key stages and all abilities. No experience of making sculpture is necessary. The session can be delivered in schools, to a cluster, or via an AccessArt Network Workshop. Please phone 01223 606139 to discuss.

The Sculptural Willow workshop can also be delivered directly to pupils.
