How to Roll a Clay Slab

By Lena Peters

Below, I demonstrate how to prepare clay and roll it into a slab with a uniform thickness which can then be used to make a clay tile or to construct a slab pot.

The clay I use at university is called a ‘buff grog’ clay body. It is quite smooth, but does have small particles of raw ceramic material (grog, or firesand) added to strengthen the clay body and prevent cracking when drying and firing.

You will need:

  • Buff grogged clay body
  • A rolling pin
  • Two lengths of wood of equal thickness
  • A rubber kidney
  • A needle tool
