Finger Palette Portraits – Fingerprint Drawing
Fingerprint Drawing By Paula Briggs and Sheila Ceccarelli.
Using marks made by fingers and hands is a useful way to approach portraiture. Fingers make a great drawing tool: they are sensitive to pressure and mark making, and at the same time the limitations of the marks which fingers can make somehow help participants overcome preconceived ideas/expectations about what their portraits “should” look like.

Just tried this with a group of (not very confident) Year 8s who will be painting self-portraits soon. It really helped make them not focus on details – spider-leg eyelashes etc – and instead on the larger shapes and structures of the face.
