Detached and Timeless Painting Workshop by Sara Dudman
Artist and educator Sara Dudman shares examples, inspiration and support for working creatively from video to capture movement and a sense of place in painting.
This project was shared with AccessArt as part of the 40 Artist Educator Project, funded by Arts Council England, aiming to highlight and celebrate artist-led teaching and facilitation.
Detached and Timeless Painting Workshop by Sara Dudman
A practical painting, drawing and art historical day for art teachers and young people aged 12-17 was held at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) in Exeter. Teachers and students working side-by-side enjoying the same learning experience created a fantastic dynamic; sharing and exchanging knowledge, skills, ideas and interpretation. First-hand engagement with the artworks was the starting point for really practical and conceptual responses in paint and charcoal.

I love this! Totally and utterly inspiring and makes me feel like I could actually let go of my terror of paint and have a go myself! Thank you so much for sharing this liberating and exciting post with AccessArt!

Thanks for your lovely comment Sheila – I’m so pleased you enjoyed the post. We had a great day at the museum – it’s always such a privilege to work directly from the works in the exhibitions 🙂 Working from video is something I’m doing a lot in my own practice as an artist and I’m finding that it’s a great way to encourage people to loosen up and create really energetic and gestural paintings. I love working with groups like this – a mix of teachers and their students together – there’s always a great atmosphere and they learn so much from each other and enjoy some time together outside their school roles.
