Changing Colour

In this second of 3 posts, artist Joe Gamble explains how using a restricted colour palette helps him create landscape studies that capture small details, colours and shapes in a free and expressive way.
Every year I spend a week by the coast in North Wales. Whilst there I work in sketchbooks, drawing the landscape there using mostly oil pastels. This specific medium allows me to work quickly, recording splashes of colour and shape from what I see. Limited in the amount of pastels I can take along, the palette I have is restricted. Through this restriction I have to adjust my approach to colour, being comfortable with not being totally literal with what I am drawing and instead letting myself be led by what is available.
