Hi, I’m unsure about when children should be drawing their designs. should I allow the children to first make the model by supplying the resources and then they design it in their sketchbooks? Thank you

Hi Lubna, the process of design through making is a great way for children to do follow their creative instinct and learn about how materials work together. A sketched design isn’t necessary. It can sometimes limit creativity if a design is drawn out first, and then followed explicitly. Instead, encourage the children to enjoy the process of making, and being in an ‘unknown’ space. In terms of sketchbook use afterwards, they can certainly make some notes and drawings in there about what they’ve made, but it this wouldn’t be a retrospective design as this isn’t the skill they’re learning here. I hope that helps!
