Graphic Inky Still Life!
By Paula Briggs
In this hour long session, the AccessArt Art Lab for ages 10, 11 and 12 explored still life through drawing and construction. This resource shares how students developed their observation and mark making skills to create charming and powerful 3d graphic images. This activity has lots of potential for development for all ages.

I love this resource. Please would you recommend some quills/dip pens for applying the ink. I have tried to source something but have struggled to locate anything- what would you suggest and where can I get hold of them?

Hi Andrew, not sure if you have tried TTS? https://www.tts-group.co.uk/victorian-dip-pens-12pk/1001239.html
There will be others available online too. Thanks, Rachel

Thanks Rachel- that is helpful. Also, would you have any tips for how to manage Year 4 children using craft knives – I am a little nervous!

Hi Andrew, as with anything potentially hazardous, teacher demonstration (and repetition of this demo) is key. If the children are shown how to use something safely but also know they are trusted to be responsible then you can mitigate some risk. Of course, there are challenges to this in large classes. You could possible set up ‘craft knife stations’ so not all children are using them at the same time, and they go to that particular table when they specifically need to use them. This could then be a table you supervise more heavily than the other ‘safe’ areas. I hope that helps!

Hi Rachel, I am really looking forward to doing this activity again and I am so glad that I allowed the Year 4s to use the craft knives. I set up a ‘station’ for craft knives as you suggested, I explained some very clear rules and I also purchased some ‘cut level 5’ gloves off Amazon that I insisted the children wore (although I think I will tell the children to wear a glove on their ‘other’ hand only and not the hand that is doing the cutting this year as it slightly impacts their fine motor control).

Hi Andrew, that’s great news and so glad they successfully managed the activity!

These are fabulous! I can’t believe you can do this in an hour with 10 and 11 year olds – I have adult groups that would take at least twice that time, and probably more! Amazing work.
