Drawing Spiral Snails

I’d like to share this art project based on drawing spirals, which can relate to a mini-beast topic in school, or stand alone as a drawing workshop.
Working with children of reception age, we talked briefly about our experience of the spiral in nature: snail shells, whirlpools, flowers etc then I did a quick demonstration of drawing a spiral.
Each child then created a spiral on a large square of white cartridge paper or black sugar paper, using chalk and oil pastels.

So lovely to see children working big! I love the physicality of this workshop and great to see children having a chance to explore strong, vibrant colour and the use of good quality materials too!

Hello Tracy, Just to let you know that I’m borrowing some shells from the Museum of Zoology here in Cambridge – I will combine looking at them and drawing them and highlight some of your ideas about sacred forms – in my next session with teenagers. It’s interesting that each time I do the Universal Symbols Quiz – at least @80% of the class chooses the spiral as their favourite symbol. I love the idea of then getting them to incorporate this gorgeous project! Thanks for the inspiration!
