Artist and educator Henry Ward presents 5 activities which he has used successfully to inspire creativity with pupils.
These ideas were shared with AccessArt as part of the 40 Artist Educator Project, funded by Arts Council England, aiming to highlight and celebrate artist-led teaching and facilitation.
5 Exercises by Henry Ward
This exciting resource offers students the opportunity to gain valuable experience in a range of activities to enable them to become more confident in their own creative skills and working practice. It includes a thought-provoking, group drawing exercise on how meaning can become lost or altered as the ‘message’ moves further from the source; a time critical exhibition challenge; a practical making project that has to be completed within a clear set of rules, which actually opens up numerous creative options for the student and illustrates the benefit of documenting thoughts and processes; and two exercises centered around the student’s ownership and management of their own studio space allocated within the classroom.

Having been a full time teacher of art in a challenging Rotherham school (and originating from a small town a short distance from Welling) I find this absolutely inspiring – especially reading about the science curriculum being taught in the art rooms…..way forward! It’s a glimpse towards how schools should be able to operate. Henry – you are a star! Thankyou for sharing the results of your energy and light!
